2020 Funded Activities

During 2020, Bahia Sail Racing Association provided support to the young sailors shown below…enabling these sailors to participate in national and international types of events.

Samantha Hemans- I420 Mid-Atlantic Championship

I would like to thank you for your support allowing me the opportunity to travel back East to Maryland to sail in the 2020 I420 Mid-Atlantic Championship in Gunpowder, Maryland. The event was hosted by the Chesapeake Experience and Sail1Design. This regatta was a great experience for me because it was out of my comfort zone. It was very shifty and overall a very hard venue to sail in. But, this experience made me a better sailor. I learned a lot about very light conditions, and how to make better tactical calls. Thank you again for giving me this opportunity to participate in this event.

Samantha Hemans – I420 Atlantic Coast Championship

I would like to thank you for giving me the opportunity to travel back East to Connecticut to sail in the 2020 I420 Atlantic Coast Championship at Indian Harbor Yacht Club in Greenwich, CT. It was a very good learning experience for me, as it was my first i420 Regatta. I had the pleasure of sailing with Noble Reynoso, who is a two-time club 420 Triple Crown Winner. Overall, this Regatta really helped me learn a lot more about the boat. I was so happy I got to sail with Noble in my first i420 regatta. Thank you again for your support.

Sophia Pearce – C420 Midwinters
Thank you so much for your support for the 2020 C420 Midwinters held in Jensen Beach, Florida earlier this year. It was such a great opportunity to compete with people at a high level in different, challenging conditions. I learned and gained so much experience from this regatta. Thank you again for your generous grant that helped make this possible!

Samantha Hemans – C420 Midwinters

Thank you for your support that helped me to go to the 2020 C420 Midwinters that was held in Jensen Beach, Florida. Overall we finished the event 21st place in the gold fleet. Thank you again for your help in allowing me to attend this amazing regatta!

Alex Stauffer – Orange Bowl Regatta

Thank you for your financial support which helped me to attend the Open Orange Bowl Regatta held at Coconut Grove Sailing Center in Miami, Florida. I participated with my skipper Sophia Devling in the I420 fleet. The regatta was the first of three qualifying events for I420 Worlds which will be held in France this summer. During the event we learned a great deal about boat speed, boat handling and much more. Sailing in such a challenging fleet is very rewarding as we have to learn fast to keep up. Overall we finished in 22 place. I can’t wait to continue to sail I420 learn more and prepare for I420 Worlds. Thank you so much for your continued support!

Thank you for your support which helped me to attend the 2019 Orange Bowl International Youth Regatta held at Coral Reef Yacht Club in Miami, Florida. There were almost 700 sailors across Optis, Lasers and C420s. I gained so much experience from this regatta, and this has helped me become a better sailor. Thank you for the grant that allowed me to sail in Florida, and I hope I can go next year.

Samantha Hemans – Orange Bowl International Youth Regatta

We would like to thank all those who provided support to Cricket Racing including Bahia Sailing Racing Association. Without your help, we would not have been able to attend this event. We are thrilled to have been invited to compete in the 18th Annual Warren Jones International Youth Match Race to be held at the end of January in Perth, hosted by Swan River Sailing and the Royal Freshwater Bay Yacht Club. This will be the first time a BYC team has been invited to race in this very prestigious event held as part of the 2020 City of Perth Festival of Sail.
